Winner - Housing Industry Association WA Sustainable House 2023
This new family house maximises the garden and open space potential of a suburban site. It is a long house with 65 percent of the site given over to a north facing garden which the living spaces of the house directly address. A small double storey wing separates the quieter bedrooms.
Primarily made of rammed earth and naturally weathering timber cladding, both were chosen for their sustainability and beautiful aging patina. The house was to reflect the influence of time, not deny it.
Internal spaces are both eventful or quiet depending on use. For instance, the ceiling in the lounge area is raked plywood which draws the eye and subtly bounces northern light around the room whilst bathroom are quiet, darker and reflective spaces.
Nature is brought into as many rooms as possible to create a sense of space and connection with views either partial of full depending on use.
Having lived in Japan for awhile, a somewhat stripped back aesthetic to promote a feeling of calmness was important.
Much like a ‘down south’ holiday home, this house has a relaxed feel, spatially simple and free from unnecessary adornment.
